This particular piece of Yew had some hard-to-come-by purple heartwood, so they are rather colourful and unique for native timber.
Natural and un-dyed and has been finished with natural oils and waxes, this timber comes from reputable timber merchants or are off-cuts from various sources.
A lot of our ancient Yews are found in churchyards but there is no doubt that they were there before the churches were built. Many churches and churchyards once stood in a circle of Yews, which were probably a legacy of the Druids' sacred groves. Among the Druids, yew wood was used to foretell the future.
Early Christian missionaries recognized the sacred nature of the trees and built their churches near them. They are a symbol of long life and are believed to ward off evil.
Britain is unique in having the largest number of ancient Yews in the world, some are known to be 2000+ years old.
